How this estimate works

Product and labor variables are calculated by window group. Shared removal, access, trim, and protection conditions apply across the schedule. Permit allowance is counted once for the project, using the full-frame allowance when any group is full-frame; contingency is calculated once on the combined project. Window-unit planning costs use frame, style, size, glass, count, and a broad material-region factor.

What does replacing 10 windows cost in this calculator?

With the example below, this calculator estimates $5,670 - $17,260 for 10 installed replacement windows, or approximately $570 - $1,730 per window. This is an illustrative planning range from our calculator, not a surveyed national average or a contractor bid.

A 10-window vinyl replacement example

The example uses standard-size, double-hung vinyl windows with Low-E double-pane glass, insert installation, mixed first- and second-floor access, standard removal, trim touch-up, ordinary protection and cleanup, and the US national cost band. All 10 windows have the same specifications.

Example project costs in US dollars
Included workLowHigh
Window units$2,600$7,000
Installation labor$1,500$3,900
Trim, flashing & sealant$700$2,300
Removal & disposal$450$1,350
Protection & cleanup$200$600
Permit / project allowance$0$260
Planning contingency$220$1,850
Total project range$5,670$17,260

Amounts are rounded independently, so displayed line items may not add exactly to the total. The per-window figure shares project allowances across 10 windows; it is not a one-window quote. Change the count in the calculator to estimate a smaller job.

To reproduce this example, reset the calculator to its default answers. Choose your actual state, product and installation method for your own project. The example stays fixed so you can compare it with your result.

Cost references and what they support

References checked September 7, 2026.

Homewyse's replacement-window installation guide lists a May 2026 starting estimate of $632–$967 per window for basic work. Its scope notes exclude finish repairs, hazardous-material work, sales tax and permit fees; removal is an option. Compare those inclusions before comparing its range with this worksheet, which separately allows for removal, trim, project fees and contingency.

Andersen's window pricing guide explains how size, style, materials and project scope affect cost, and when an insert can retain a sound existing frame. It supports the scope distinctions used here, not our dollar amounts or an Andersen product quote.

Our ranges are independently selected planning assumptions. These references do not supply or validate every rate in the calculator. State selection uses broad cost bands; it does not pull local contractor prices. A written, itemized local quote is needed before committing to the work.

Which prices are estimates?

Default window-unit prices are planning allowances, not live retail listings. Installation, trim and flashing, removal, protection, permit allowance and contingency are also estimates. None is an itemized offer from a contractor. A state selection adjusts the broad planning band; it does not verify local availability, permit requirements or labor prices.

If you have a supplier's product-only price, enter it for the matching window group. That amount replaces the estimated window-unit price for that group; installation and the other project allowances remain separate. Match the exact series, size, glass, color and included accessories. A price for one specification cannot establish a nationwide budget or premium tier for every window made from the same material.

Pella's online purchase guidance distinguishes a product purchase from installation. By contrast, Home Depot's installation cost guide describes full-service estimates that include products, labor, applicable permits and taxes. Do not enter a full installed quote as a product-only price: the worksheet would add installation again.

Before comparing a quote

Check that the price includes the window units as well as installation. Match the count, frame, glass, removal and finish scope. This example excludes new openings, structural changes, concealed water damage and lead-paint remediation. Sales tax and financing are not calculated, and no rebates or energy savings have been deducted.

Planning a project with different windows

Group windows only when their specifications and installation method match. For example, keep eight standard double-hung windows separate from two large picture windows. Give each group its own quantity, material, glass and size. Shared access and site conditions apply to the project; use separate estimates if the work will happen at different properties or as separately contracted phases.

The project summary combines the groups and shares the permit allowance and contingency across the job. Splitting identical windows into two groups does not create a second project fee. It also does not assume a bulk discount: any supplier or installation discount needs a written offer. A known material price improves the product portion of the estimate, but it does not make the remaining allowances a firm quote.

When comparing two bids, mark an item as included only if the written scope says so. Leave uncertain items unknown and ask the installer to clarify. The same total may cover different windows, removal work, restoration or warranty terms. A lower price alone does not establish better value, and a checklist cannot verify the installer's workmanship or the suitability of a window for your home.

How to use this window replacement calculator

Use it for a planning range

  1. Start with the visible default estimate, then enter your window count and state. Valid changes update the planning range without completing a multi-step form.
  2. Add a separate group when window style, size, frame, glass or installation method differs. Open the window and project details to refine the defaults. If you have a product-only supplier price, enter it for the matching group.
  3. Review the group schedule and component costs, then compare two written quotes by count and included work. Resolve unknown or different scope items before comparing their totals; the worksheet does not choose a contractor for you.

Example window estimate

  • 10 standard double-hung replacement windows
  • Vinyl frames, Low-E double-pane glass, and insert installation
  • Mixed access, standard removal and trim touch-up, US national baseline

The calculator prices the units, installation, trim and flashing, removal, protection, permit allowance, and contingency separately before showing the total and per-window range.

A quote above the range may still make sense if it includes full-frame work, rotted trim repair, custom sizes, specialty glass, or lead-safe procedures.

Common cost drivers

  • Full-frame replacement usually costs more than insert replacement because trim, flashing, and finish work are involved.
  • Frame material, operating style, unit size, glass package, and product line change the window-unit allowance.
  • Upper-floor access, brittle finishes, difficult removal, trim or sill repair, and lead-safe controls add separate labor and protection costs.
  • Energy rebates, product warranties, and tax-credit eligibility are not built into the estimate.

Use this range to compare local quotes

Before comparing prices, make sure each written quote uses the same window count, install scope, frame, glass, trim, warranty, and lead-safe assumptions.

Lower range

Basic insert replacement

Sound existing frames, vinyl units, simple sizes, and mostly first-floor access.

Middle range

Standard full-home replacement

Low-E double pane units, mixed access, disposal, and basic finish touch-ups.

Higher range

Full-frame or premium windows

Rot repair, custom sizes, wood or fiberglass frames, triple-pane glass, or difficult access.

Cost data note

Independent US planning allowances, not a survey of contractor bids. An optional product-only price replaces the material allowance for its window group. State selection applies a broad cost band to modeled costs, not a ZIP-level quote or a local price lookup.

v0 uses a US national baseline plus broad state/region adjustment. It does not provide ZIP-level pricing.

Window replacement cost calculator FAQ

Does this window replacement calculator include labor?

Yes, the range is for installed replacement windows and includes a broad labor assumption. It does not replace a site-specific installer quote.

Should I choose insert or full-frame replacement?

Use insert replacement when the existing frame is sound and the scope is limited. Full-frame work is more appropriate when there is rot, water damage, trim damage, or a need to correct the opening.

Does the estimate include lead-safe work?

The advanced inputs add a broad lead-safe setup and cleanup allowance. Testing, remediation, documentation, and site-specific regulatory requirements still need a qualified contractor quote.

Why do window quotes vary so much?

Quotes can vary because frame material, glass package, install scope, trim repair, access, warranty, and local labor all change the final installed price.

Should I use the replacement or installation calculator?

Use this replacement calculator when new units go into existing openings. Use the Window Installation Cost Calculator when creating, resizing, or structurally modifying an opening.
